Auto Care Steps for a Stress Free Road Trip

Summer road trip season is here. Taking proactive steps to make sure your vehicle is operating properly will help avoid the hassle and unexpected cost of a breakdown away from home, says the non-profit Car Care Council.

This summer, AAA expects to receive calls from over seven million stranded motorists experiencing car trouble. The majority of issues the travel group anticipates will cause car problems, such as dead batteries and flat tires, can be prevented with a pre-trip vehicle inspection.

"Summer heat can take a toll on a vehicle, especially if it hasn't been properly maintained," said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. "Whether you do it yourself or visit a trusted professional technician, a pre-trip vehicle check will give you peace of mind and provide the opportunity to make any necessary repairs before you hit the highway."

AAA also reports that four out of 10 drivers are unprepared for vehicle breakdowns. So you and your vehicle are ready for the road, the Car Care Council recommends taking the following auto care steps before you leave home.

  • Check the battery and replace if necessary. Be sure the electrical system is charging at the correct rate; overcharging can damage a battery as quickly as undercharging. Excessive heat and overcharging shortens the life of a battery.
  • Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots.
  • Check the HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) system as proper cooling performance is critical for interior comfort.
  • Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, brake and transmission as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.
  • Check the wipers and lighting so that you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and replace worn wiper blades so you can see clearly when driving during precipitation.
  • Check the emergency kit and restock, if necessary. Be sure to fully charge cell phones before leaving home.

The Car Care Council also recommends inspecting the brake system and performing a tune-up to help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy.

What Our Customers Are Saying

I needed a comprehensive pre-purchase inspection to buy a car sight unseen from the next state over. I am so grateful I found Pat and Joe. Not only did they do a great job trouble-shooting with honesty and integrity, they were really fun to work with! They went over and beyond to give me the best info possible to make a decision, then fixed the issues for a fair price. They were willing to keep the car for me an extra week, discussed all the details as we went along, and provided a peace of mind I couldn't have purchased the car without. HIGHLY recommend this outfit! Thanks, guys!

What a great experience we had with Pro Tune Plus! We were stranded nearby as we were driving through after a badlands camping trip when we noticed that 3 of 6 tire studs had sheared off, and only 1 of 3 remaining lug nuts were tight. We had AAA tow our truck to Pro Tune Plus on a Saturday afternoon, and I called Monday morning when they opened after the weekend and they said they would get it done that day, an easy inexpensive fix, and that was exactly how it turned out! We had since taken a cab to rent a car at the airport and drove home, and they took it the extra mile and parked our truck at the airport for us so we could drop off the rental car that night and not have to take a cab to pick up the truck at the shop, thank you!!

I called Pro Tune Plus just for some information regarding automotive wiring. The fellow I talked to was extremely helpful and pleasant, and spent a few minutes with me on the phone without seeming rushed even without any indication from me that I would be bringing my project in for them to work on. I am impressed that he genuinely was interested in sharing his knowledge with me and that he answered my questions to my satisfaction. Although I don't currently have need of the service Pro Tune Plus provides, the interaction I had with them ensures that the next time I do need it, they will be the call I make. Thank You for the gracious attitude, and information!

I highly recommend Pro Tune Plus based on my experience. I was driving from Virginia to Saskatchewan in January and my AWD system in my volvo xc 70 failed. I was stuck in a strange town and unsure of where to take my car. Both AAA and the staff at the Marriott Residence Inn seemed to think Pro Tune Plus would be decent. I was more than impressed with their service and the options offered in getting me back on the road. They did a great job; show impeccable attention to detail; and understood my need to get my car fixed and back to grad school quickly and cheaply. Fixing a Volvo in an area where there aren't alot of Volvos was scary for me but it worked out great!
